I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

btw why are we aiming at 3x5 instead of 5x5? i always do 5x5, that's stronglifts right?

I think it's because by the time most people reach 70kg the volume will be too much, so they will have reduced to 3x5. I will likely not reach 70kg on stronglifts, probably be on an intermediate program by that time. This is highly dependant on BW though. Someone who is 100kg+, for instance, could quite easily reach 70kg whilst on 5x5.

is it really depending on someone's BW? i think it depends on the musclemass.
cause ppl that are big dont have necesarily a lot of muscle.

anyway my PR is now with 5x5 (week 8 of beginners stronglifts), until now i increased every workout and i hope i can do this until 55 KG OHP at least for 5x5.

I do also 5x5 at the moment, but in the past I did 3x5. There isn't much difference between 5x5 and 3x5 in terms of weight.

Likewise Mike, but I thought the challenge was only for anyone whose OHP is currently under 50kg, which seems more in keeping with a "challenge".

Perhaps I should have found this thread when I started. I started OHP at 45kg (Dec 9th 2009).

Oh well, I guess I'm out of the race to 70kg challenge.

This race started in April 2009.

So I would say that anyone whose OHP was below 50 kg around April 2009 can participate. Of course, anyone whose current OHP is below 50 kg can participate as well.

The idea of this race is to see what it takes to reach 70 kg for the untrained people.

If someone with a substantial training experience, but after a layoff, decides to start below 50 kg, and then adds 2.5 kg every week until reaching 70 kg, I would say that this is not what this race is about.

Mike: Doubt that very much. Looks basically like: If you want in, then you're in.

Good progress Mike in two months :D

I decided I wasn't eligible because I've tested my 1-RM at around 70kg, so I'm pretty sure at full effort it would be more than 50kg for 3x5. But if you go by what weights I actually do in my workouts then, yeah, maybe I could argue all my OHPs are currently under 50kg  .

Good luck with the race!

Vlad posted while I was writing mine!

Yeah, another demonstration that you can interpret how you like. I could equally say - yes, I've been training for years but, man, if I could progress just from a 1-RM of 70kg to a 3x5 RM of 70kg then I'd be rapt and I know for me personally that would represent a huge achievement. So why have challenges only for those who find it easier to progress quickly by dint of being new to training?

As far as I'm concerned the best challenges are ones I set for myself. That said, if I think I stand a chance at competing in some of the challenges in this forum then I don't want to miss out on the fun of joining in :( . On the other hand I know that something like the 500lb deadlift challenge is almost certainly way beyond me no matter how many years I work at it. To put it in perspective, that weight would better the NZ masters record for my age and weight class. To someone else, heavier and younger, achieving that weight might represent a mere 60% of the national record for their age and weight category.

Anyways, I've rambled far too much in this thread. Time to let it be.

John, the rules do not say you cannot participate. The point is that there should be a real challenge.

Since your 1RM is 70 kg, you should definately participate if you wish.

This race is not for the beginners only. But the fact is that most untrained people will stall at 50 kg 5x5 (or below), and after that it will be very hard work to get to 70 kg 5x5 (or 3x5 if you wish).

So just join the race. It will be more fun with more people!

All right, I'll play. :) The OHP is one of my favorite exercises and my main goal, so this'll be a good motivator! I'm currently at 30 kg, 5x5. Will do 32 kg next workout. Anyone think I can complete the challenge within 2010?

Well, you are both 'fast' and 'bulbous' so I guess you've got as good a chance as anybody. Except that one guy 'LargeAndHideouslyStrong'; he's the one I'd have my money on, but have a go I say. :D

Forgot about this challenge. I'll join too, but I won't get 70kg probably until the year is over. Right now I have completed 41kg for 3X5, so I will start in the lowest category and see how fast I can work my way up. :)
