I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

The stronglifts program mentions if your skinny and want to bulk up drink milk. I was wondering……. Is this simply to increase protein consumption or would you gain weight in fat? I’m 79KG and still want to bulk out a bit but I don’t want to put on any fat. Ive noticed a real difference form not eating carbs only after workouts so don’t want to un-do the good work I’ve put in all ready. Would I benefit from making my protein shakes with milk, or should I stick to water??

You really can't gain any significant amount of weight without adding some fat. GOMAD will add fat, but it will also add a lot of muscle. Fat can be lost after with a low carb diet. Which is more important to you, staying lean, or adding slabs of muscle to your frame?

I met a guy who keeps a tub of clover (butter like spread) under his desk at work, he just eats it with a spoon when nobody is looking.

While that is one particularly gross example you do need significant amounts of calories to really 'bulk' especially if you are a thin person. Being thin shows you are probably undereating. If you want to get bigger you need a major excess of calories to fuel your workouts and muscle building. It is as simple as that. No fuel = No energy for workouts + No energy for muscle building.

Making your shakes with milk is barely even gonna make a dent.

I think I just might do this the old fashioned way then & bide my time. It took me a while to get the weight off & I’m really not bothered about gaining fat to look bigger only to have to bust my balls again to strip all the aft off. From the sounds of it I’ll end up looking like a porker going through this process.

Thanks for the advise though

It is much more difficult to gain muscle/strength with an calorie deficit than it is to shed a little fat when you already have the muscles. Look at the people who rely on this professionally; bodybuilders.

When they go on a 'bulk' they really eat anything and everything often taking weight gainer supplements. Then they easily shed fat a short time before a competition.

Boxers/fighters also display the whole bulking/cutting thing but to a smaller extent as they do not want to grow too much.

I can't bulk up at all.
Any ideas?
I read stronglifts bit on where if you can squat 1.5x ur body weight you will no longer be skinny.
I'm 178cm and 65kg. I eat around 4000 calories a day. I am a rower so i do have lots of training.
My 1RM for squats is 120kg however I am still light and cant gain weight. I recently sprainedbec my wrist so my strength coach decided to replace cleans, deadlift, snatch, bench row all with squats. So each session I have been doing 20 sets of 10 squats on 80kg. However even with doing so many squats i still havent gained any weight. Any ideas?

Eat more. Or do GOMAD. Or both. Are you actually eating 4000 calories/day, or do you just think you are (i.e. have you tracked your caloric intake with something like FitDay or CalorieKing)?

And FYI there are a LOT of threads asking similar questions to yours, so I would advise reading or posting in them next time before starting a new topic in the forum.

I would start with the FAQ section. Link here. That should help answer all of your questions as there's a lot of information there.
