I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Throat/oesophagus irritation after eating

Occasionally after eating a large meal I can feel an irritating sensation in my throat and lower down in my oesophagus (gullet) like there is something stuck there. Does anyone know what might be the problem? I try drinking water to hoping to dislodge whatever I can feel there, but no amount of water seems to get rid of the feeling.

Maybe you are eating too much at once at one meal ?
Try to cut down the portions but increase the frequency so you should end up with the same amount of food ... 5 to 6 meals a day is what is most suggested here.

Yeah, I think you're right. I'll cut down the portion sizes from now on.

Cheers!

I had issues with this problem for years. I finally saw a doctor. I have a form of acid reflux that causes swelling in the esophagus, called a "stricture". I now take prilosec (lessens stomach acid production) every morning and occasionally an antacid like Tums after drinking. This prevents food from sticking on the way down and no more irritation. If this lasts for more than a month or two, I'd talk to a doctor.

I had a very similar if not the same issue. It was my esophagus. When I would eat bread or something of that nature and eat it too fast or too much without water it would feel like it would get stuck. The reason was acid reflux. I use prilosec in the morning as well. Does wonders.

Quick tips though: It may have to do with the type of food you eat (anything with carbonation kills me, apples, acid stuff, etc) , the quantity of food you eat in a meal, your chewing habits (if you don't chew your food all the way vs. stuffing it down), etc...

Flicker hi. I might be accused of being over cautious but I wouldnt wait two months to see a doctor. If its something more sinister than the previous posters stated then you might be glad you got it checked earlier rather than later. If its not serious then no harm done...but if it is then its best to do something about it straight away.
