I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Unilateral Training for Muscle Imbalances

Hello all,

I'm 6-7 weeks into Stronglifts 5x5 preceded by absolutely no exercise. Things have been going great; I only just stalled for the first time last week on Overhead Press at 42.5 kg, I'm feeling better, eating better and have been noticing strength increases and physical appearance changes.

The only thing I'm concerned about (other than lack of sleep, different animal) is a sense of imbalance between my right and left sides. Mostly in the arms, but subtly all over it seems. Too be honest, I think it's psychological as I've done no specific measurements, but the feeling nags nonetheless.

People here have mentioned that trying hard and time will resolve the imbalances, but I can't help but fell that they have become more pronounced. From an anything-but-credible source, I have heard that unilateral training can give the weak side a helping hand. Is this true? Can I fit this in between my usual routine? Should I just shut up and train?

I don't have an answer to your specific question.

I think this is another reason why it is important to start with just the barbell when commencing 5x5, you can really be a slave to form when your not struggling with a heavy load.
Although for me I had to do it slowly, just to make sure one side wasn't going up faster then the other... And Medhi does say you just do your exercises fast(which I do now) so I'm not sure if my advice is worthwhile.
I think it boils down to a lot of concentration, you basically have to make your stronger side hold back and adjust itself to your weak side.

You can use any modality in your quest to strength, because resistance is resistance, whether it comes from a barbell, dumb bell, your body, or an object (ex. sandbag). The only reason to use any modality over any other modality is because each one has it's own benefits.
