I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Nice socks, Jimmy!
Love the pic of your son with Jimmy, although Little Mouse doesn't seem all that impressed - maybe one day he'll understand...

Oh he was VERY impressed - just my photography and that he was looking at the size of Jimmy's hands especially as he put his strongman 'thumbs up' for the pic.

Nice one Mouse. Great pics.

Good meeting you yesterday. You should have asked Jimmy to pose in your whities.

Summed up by the winner:

Big Loz Shahlaei wrote:UKSC ENGLANDS STRONGEST MAN 2009

This was a fantastic contest run by elite strongman productions and is the qualifying route for the UKSM in Belfast.

We had a very strong field for this contest with only Terry Hollands, Mark Felix and Darren Sadler missing.

The Line up was

Jimmy Marku (UKSC England’s strongest man 06, 07 and 08)
Mark Westaby
Jay Hughes
Dave Mceaney
Gary Gardner
Mark Lawson
Dave Meer
Alex Culetto
Simon Flint
Laurence Shahlaei
Rob Frampton
Paul Carter
Kelvin Gardner

The Events were

265kg Axle squat for reps
130kg farmers for distance
Big wooden log for max
Arm over arm truck pull
Big van deadlift Approx 340kg for reps
Stones 110-190kg

I knew I was in good shape for this contest, and felt I had a great chance.

Event 1 Squat, I was sent the rules list over a month ago saying no suits would be used so when I turned up and noticed most of the guys using suits I wasn’t to happy as I didn’t bring mine with me, but my squatting been going well so I just thought I will get on with it. We have a number of good squatters in the UK at the mo but most people expected this to be between me and Jimmy Marku. Jimmy went before me and pushed himself hard and did an impressive 14 reps (but I feel he pushed to hard on this and it took a lot out of him) after watching jimmy I did enough to take 2nd place with 10 reps and I think Dave Meer and Alex Culetto both did 9. I should also mention rob Frampton’s 8th rep. he looked like he was stuck in the hole but some how managed to good morning his 8th reps. this prob didn’t help his back latter in the comp.

2nd event was the farmers for distance, always a good event for me but the handles were painted with a gloss paint which made it a lot harder, mark westaby set the lead with 61meters. I thought if I could beat this it would give me a good score. I think I went 69 meters which was holding up well till Mark Lawson did a very impressive run of 75metres to take the win. Jimmy really struggled with this event only doing around 30meters.

Event 3 was the log for max with a huge wooden log, the numbers by everyone were well down as it was heavier on one side and just very awkward. Jimmy, rob, me and Simon flint all failing the 155log, mark westaby and alex culletto were joint 2nd failing 165 and Big Dave Meer showed his world class pressing winning with 165.

The 4th event was the arm over arm. This is an event I have put a lot of work into as it use to be a terrible event for me, but lost of help from my training partners at the RAC gym in Cirencester I have improved a lot. By some miracle I won this event with Mark Lawson 2nd Jimmy 3rd and Alex 4th.

Going into the deadlift I decided I wanted to get this won before the last event. But when Jimmy only managed one rep I thought this is heavy. Simon flint (a 380kg deadlifter only got 2reps. Because of how much those to big deadlifters struggled Alex decided to pass so I knew if I come top 3 in the dead I had won the contest. I got really focused and pulled 6reps knowing it would be enough, rob Frampton would have done 6 also but his strap broke on his 3rd rep so I rushed out to give him mine and he got 5 in the end. Dave Meer also did 5 to get joint 2nd with rob, and showed us how hard he’s been working as this was once a week event for Dave.

So I had won before doing the stones which was a nice feeling but I thought I would have a go at the stones, I put 5 up and almost had the 6th but I didn’t push it. I think mark westaby pulled the best time out for all 6 which pulled him into 2nd place over all.

At the end of the day the top 8 were

1st Big Loz I had a great day and am very happy to win
2nd Mark Westaby. Mark is just a big strong man. What more can you say!
3rd Alex Culletto. Alex just gets better and better every time I see him. If he can sort his deadlift out he will be a big threat next year

=4th Mark Lawson. Mark has been up there for years in the UK, good to meet you today mate.
=4th Dave Meer. Me and Dave have both just had babies so I think that’s the secret to doing well lol. Amazing improvement on your deads buddy.
6th Jay Hughes Jay is one of the most competitive guys in the UK, just had a bad start today but could have been much higher on a different day.
7th Jimmy Marku. Jimmy had to compete in the toughest strongman comp in the world a week ago so he was never going to be at his best plus he has a back injury that he needs to get sorted. I want you at your best next time buddy.
8th was Rob Frampton. Rob also had back probs which he needs to get sorted, again on a different day would have been much higher.

All in all im happy with how it went but I will be back to the drawing bored to look at areas that need improving. Im never satisfied so expect a lot more to come in the next few years.

Thanks to Bob and his team for putting on a great comp. see you all soon

Loz UKSC England’s Strongest man 2009 J

Very impressive, Mouse. Each one of them is a monster.

Little mouse does look pretty intrigued by Jimmy's thumb.

Took a second look and did see that Little Mouse was looking at Jimmy's thumbs up. Didn't notice that the first time.
