I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Last friday i did my 6th. workout session and in the afternoon i got an headache i never had before. Realy really bad hurting like hell all over the front of my head.
I had my fair share of headaches in the past but this one was mind blowing literally.
Took 800 mg ibuprofen and did not work. Went to bed hoping to fall asleep as fast as possible.
Next morning it was gone.
today i did my monday workout and while im typing this the same type of headache is coming up.
Should i be worried? Is it related with the workout or just something else. How to prevent it what to do.
Its increasing by the minute now.
I am going to eat pasta and salad to see if it is some glucose level problem. Damn it worries me.
Any advice assist very much appreciated

Headaches are often sign of dehydration (check hangovers).

* How much water are you drinking per day?
* How much do you weigh/tall are you?
* What do you eat?
* What do you drink? (coffe/tea/alcohol/etc)

I drink one liter water during workout during the 1 min. recovery time i take zips of water.
During the day i drink maybe one more liter of water, two coffees, two cans of coke, sometimes one beer a week.
My weight is 80Kg, height is 1.84 m.
In morning before workout i eat nothing and drink only one coffee, after workout half grilled chicken or pasta plate, two sandwiches later on and evening meal which is most of the time 300 gram meat/steak/chicken/pork and +/-400 gram of potatoes, fries or spaghetti/pizza.

@JohnyAce Thanks for the advice and I called my doctor to ask him. His reply was that it could be dehydration because i started to do 3x a week workout and kept my normal eating/drinking habits as before meaning i do not drink enough and there is such an thing of migraine after workout thing of glucose level drops. He said not to worry and go to bed early and drink more water.

Thank you both for the assist.

So 2 liter per water daily. At 80kg I guess you get it about 4000kcal, so you should get at least 4000kcal. Coffee/coke contains caffeine with dehydrates, meaning you need more water than the 4l.

Start drinking 4 liter water per day (I'd say even 5). Let us know if headache disappears.

Your doc is right!

If you're working out first thing in the morning, you're going to wake up slightly dehydrated (I know I always do). Add to that the coffee before your workout (dehydrating you further) and the lack of immediate fuel (you state you don't eat before your morning workout), then your poor body will be crying out for sustenance.

Personally, I'd try and eat a light breakfast 30 minutes to an hour before your morning workout (oatmeal with fruit, for example) and wash it down with a large glass or two of water. At least that way your body will have something to use as fuel.

Thanks Silentbob will start doing that.
My wife is mad at me that im working out at my age with an heavy program and not eating, drinking as even normal people should do.
The arguments are stacking up against me. Will take my eating/drinking habits under the loop.
Im only feel sick of the thought of eating in the morning tho.

Yesterday evening i was drinking lots of water and some more food and the headache was slowing down.
I woke up this morning and did not drink my normal triple AAA rated coffee with sugar. Instead im drinking water.
I have no headache and will see if i get awake without the coffee.
Im no longer worried since you guys (and the doctor) explained it to me the why.
Thanks. Much appreciated!

I think the cause of the headache was "My wife is mad at me..." lol jk

Hey Danniego, if it's migraine, I have unfortunate experience with that. I've never had it triggered by a workout though. But FWIW, I have found that acetaminophen works a lot better than ibuprofen, although that may be an individual thing. The other thing that surprisingly (to me anyway) helps, is caffeine. So Excedrine is my go-to remedy, because it contains both, as well as aspirin.

Do you have any visual effects with it? Things like seeing stars, tunnel vision, or a weirdly warped view of things? That's common with migraine and could be a sign that that's what you've got. It can also be accompanied by some degree of nausea.

But I certainly second the notion of talking to the doc regardless, which apparently you already did. But if you up your liquid intake and the headache persists, call him back.

Yo Ulbonado,
Normally ibuprofen works for me but only when it seems tension related since ibu is an muscle relaxer for backpain also.
Acetaminophen i will try ask the local street pusher around the corner to see if he has it.
Today is the first time i did not take any caffeine drinks and started this morning with water and vegetable juice freshly made by my wife who is not mad at me today (so it seems since she made the juice). Im drinking water all day and tomorrow will do my workout as planned and drink lots of water pre, during and post workout. Then monitor if the same headache returns i had for the last two workouts. But i find it hard to drink 4+ ltr. of water. It could also be of the freezing cold walking back and to the gym without proper protection of my head.

Damn,
Got hit with headache again this afternoon after the workout. Less severe as the first one but the first one was mind blowing painfull.
I did not drink for two days any coffee or caffeinated drinks. Woke up drank no coffee's , 0.5ltr water, had breakfast and drinking water during workout and post workout drinking and eating.
Hope this is not permanently and linked to working out.
Could it be some muscles or nerves in my neck of the squat bar pressing on it? Doesn't feel like that but maybe.. maybe the reverse crunch mxing up my intestine and creating constipation as i can recall that this type of headache i got when i am constipated of airplane food for instance. [Clueless ramblings.] and no my wife is not mad at me so thats not where the headache is coming from

Sorry to hear it man.

Maybe you're having withdrawal symptoms. Seriously though, caffeine for me helps get rid of my headaches, though of course everyone's different. But when I have headaches I take more caffeine, not less.

Danniego wrote:Could it be some muscles or nerves in my neck of the squat bar pressing on it?

Possible I guess, although I remember reading that migraines might be caused by blood vessels in the head contracting. Maybe the extra rush of blood from working out causes a similar effect for you?

But if it was not as bad today, then maybe continue the hydration program and give it a few more workouts to see if it keeps improving. If not, you probably have to give the doc another call. :?

Best of luck to you, hopefully you'll get cleanly past this soon!

Oh one other thing-- in your earlier post you mentioned that the doc alluded to headaches caused by post-workout glucose drop. I get this sort of thing too, although for whatever reason it has never happened after working out. But I get headaches if I skip a meal or go too long without eating, so this could easily be your problem too. Maybe bring a little snack to the gym to get the glucose levels back up right after. Some fruit or granola maybe. Worth a try at least, no?
