I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Get on your hands and knees and just reach back over your head (assuming you're flexible enough to do this. If not, then you should stick to regular pushups and/or do yoga) or just have someone place it there for you. A dumbell behind your neck works good too because you can squeeze the little bar between the back of your neck and your traps.

It has already been mentioned earlier in this thread:
a backpack is a lot easier to add weight when doing pushups.

No need to take yoga classes and/or being restricted to normal pushups only.

Well yeah, but I was just saying in case he didn't want to use the backpack. It's a helluva lot quicker to just put a weight back there then carry around an extra bag and take the time to strap it on. To each his own...

I am a novice lifter. I have been lifting with free weights for 6 months this last time and have been lifting off and on for 2 years. I have not done push ups in forever until I started using Stronglifts. And I have to tell you that first time I completed just 36 pushups and there were parts of my back and shoulders that felt the effect and I have been using heavy free weights for months.
So I say if there is a way to incorporate both bench and push-up or weighted push-ups - you will receive benefits of using muscles that each one exercise lacks.
