I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Hey, I joined my school gym and am starting a 4 day/week program where i do 40 min/day at lunch.
I also play the piano, so I'm worried about my wrists/arms. Is it advisable to do weights? Or is it one or the other?

Thanks alot, I can post more details if you want.

Weights + Piano?

Details would be a good idea - is there anything in particular that you are concerned about - do you have a predisposition to an injury ??

Weights + Piano?

Postby femtoman » Fri Jan 25, 2008 8:42 pm

I took piano lessons from April 2007-Dec 2007.  This also happened to cross with when I started lifting 3-5 times a week again.
I didn't have any problems with piano playing and lifting.  The muscle/hand movement memory you develop with piano forces the correct actions even if your arms, hands, and fingers are sore from a workout.  I find the same thing happens when playing basketball.  Sometimes my legs are really sore and lethargic, but when playing a game, my natural instinct causes my legs to react normally despite the soreness.  You'll find that when playing piano, no matter how sore you are, you'll move to the right spot since you've engrained the muscle memory with all your practice.

I think you have answered the question yourself,Strength Training shouldnt interfere with the Piano and if it does you can slow it down or stop.

Weights + Piano?

Lifting strengthens your grip and fingers, which will really make your piano playing better. To play piano you need to have strong fingers!!

I play guitar and I have improved lot from the increased finger strength.

Weights + Piano?

I've noticed since beginning strength training that my hands don't hurt anymore when I play Guitar Hero 3 -- I know, not a real instrument but the lack of pain has gotta count for something.

Weights + Piano?

I used to have major issues with pain in my forearms, wrists, and hands.  Since starting the program, none of this has come back.  Like others said, try it and see how it goes...  will probably help if anything.
