I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

What I like about this site...

Postby overdrive23 on Wed Oct 22, 2008 3:01 pm

My main reason for even continuing to use this site is as such:

The other two "heavyweights" in the weightlifting forum world are bb.com and t-nation. (if there are others, please tell us your account of them)

BOTH of those are nothing but a massive plug for their products. It has started to bug me with the ads and stupidity that goes on there. Let alone their massively expensive supplements. When it comes down to it; you dont NEED supplements...or they would have had a different name instead of SUPPLEMENTS. And if you MUST buy supplements; there are SO many cheaper outlets. It's amazing just how cheap you can get some of the "new' supplements on some sites I have found. This is of course, in comparison to the prices on these two sites.

I'm not 100% against these sites; actually i am on one quite frequently, but it's only because there are more topics and more people there. The one downfall of this site...but that should change with time. I tell people about this site all the time and hopefully you do too.

The other thing I like about this site is that there isn't any stupid inter-net fighting and people being anuses. Hell, when I started posting here I dick to a few people; but i spoke with an admin and then asked myself 'wtf?' and now i am here to do nothing but learn and assist.

To the admins and mods here; good work!

Thanks!

I agree completely. One of the biggest reasons I tried stronglifts was the lack of bullshit ads pushing brightly colored supplements. That and the supportive atmosphere on the forum is just great. For people just getting into strength training, this is the perfect environment. Even for more experienced lifters, there is still tons of great information and helpful people. So yes, thanks to everyone involved in creating and running this site, and the great people who make up the community.

Thanks for the kind words overdrive23. That admin was me ;-) I send warnings from time to time when I think something can be said in a more "civilized" way. Will put a forum guideline online soon, have a draft lying around. But thanks for listening to what I said, greatly appreciated.

Hands down, this forum. No flame wars, BS 'first comment' crap, honest people with solid advice. I have seen NOWHERE ELSE with this. I wouldn't care if Medhi charged $15 for the SL programs and E book as the forum is the grease that makes the machine work best. I've learned more and improved more in the last six months than the previous two years, just from the articles and forum. Priceless.

There is nothing wrong with supplements; but I think that the ads and prices are just getting out of hand.

It saddens me that such crap is being pushed at such a high price; and people buy it! For example:

Rev-Z from Biotest. It's Reservetrol. (I probably spelled that wrong, whoops). There is nothing wrong wit the supplement; but it is sold as an anti-estrogen / pro-test supplement.

Now, go look up the supplement and see if you can find that information. I was able to find 99% of the time that it is held as a great anti-oxidant. Granted I didn't turn every stone; but google is a good barometer when searching things. If I didn't see any studies on the first 2 pages....it's minor; if it's able to substantiated.

(I'm not knocking everything bio-test has, I love a few other products they have and even have a few t-shirts! Just some things are too much)

This site; plain and simple.

Mehdi, do you advertise for this site anywhere? We gotta get some more volume in here. there are a lot of smart people out there that should swing this way!!

Not advertising in any way. Best way to help out is:
* word of mouth
* social media: vote articles on stumbleupon, del.icio.us, reddit, etc
* link: link to articles/site/forum on other sites/forums
* email: email articles/ebook to friends, family, etc

I have a pretty good eye for bullshit, and when I first came to stronglifts, I could tell straight away there was something different about it. Mehdi, I think one of the greatest strengths of stronglifts.com is how clearly legit it is, just good information with no catch, really stands out on the internet.

And this forum is easily one of the most chill places on the internet, even with pretty minimal moderation. I really don't know how such a generally friendly and polite culture was created here, but I'm honestly proud to be part of it.

Point blank, there is less BS than the other sites for sure. Also, the forum seems to be much cleaner. Although I used to think some of the things that went on with the other forums was funny, it has gotten out of hand in the last couple of years so I haven't posted on them in a long time and don't plan to either. Keep up the good work here!

Totally agreed. Afterall this is the site where I literally spend 4 hours everyday reading every single articles/topic...JK. Not 4 hours, something close. Anyways, yeah such a great website and community. I tell every single of my friend that works out to stop by here and read to educate themself. (some of them are just too stubborn to try anything except the "myths")

Thanks again Mehdi.

I think Rugger pretty much said it all. This site is the next best thing to a (competent) personal trainer/nutritionist/coach.

Just today I gave someone in my gym the URL to stronglifts.

Mehdi, I realize you aren't getting rich off this but you are making a big difference to the current and future well being of the people here.

Perhaps you should run a poll, to see how many of your readers/members have reached their goals (i.e. weight loss, lost the skinny look, etc)?

There are a lot of people on here who talk a lot of sense, and give good solid advice to the novices. I wish there had be such a resource when I started out 20 years ago. I actually owned an arm blaster, can you belive that?! Stronglifts would have saved me from that.
The only other site that I spend as much time on is Elitefts.com, their exercise directory is hilarious I love the descriptions of bodybuilding style exercises you can tell they don't have much time for them.

Bench 450+
these numbers will go up (except the bench....bloody shoulder joint)

Much concurrations!

This is the only site thus far (and I spend way too much time in the internet) that has the critical point for me:

People don't talk crap about others

I can't underline enough how much that single thing speaks for stronglifts.

Disc.

.. And let's keep it like that.

I became a member of SL about 5 months back. Around that time, I also came across a couple of other forums & became a member.

Now my posts on SL are above 100 & the other forums combined, it is not even a double digit figure. Now I cannot spend a day without reading the SL forum & I have no need to look at any other forums except when redirected from SL.

Thanks a ton Mehdi for the great site & Thanks megatons to all the other members for keeping the forum so alive & so BSfree.
