I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Yeah. Lifting heavy shit off the floor. And lifting heavy shit over your head. Very satisfying.

Although DL is my fav, I would concentrate max on OHP! It is the toughest and people usually stall on it fast!

No tricep kickbacks???!?!

j/k, OHP for sure... Lifting a heavy weight over your head just says "strength" to me more so than any other lift.

man dont ever go there. please.

OK,that's a fair point. In Sweden the equivalent of planetfitness is called SATS, many friends of mine have been kicked out because of deadliftíng. (On a related note "SATS" is Stockholm slang for semen.)

The bench is my least favorite lift by far. If there were a poll I would vote it most useless and over-hyped lift ever invented.

OK, it has its uses I know, general strength and all, but good God it is ridiculous how much emphasis is put on it. Squats and deadlifts are so much better overall.

But the Overhead Press now... It even sounds cool as an acronym... "You down with O-H-P?" 8)

I like the deadlift the most... it's the easiest to really put 100% effort into I find, and my body shape makes it my naturally strongest lift by quite a lot. I find squats to be the least pleasant to do of all lifts (even though they are much better than my bench is, man I suck at bench).

I like the bench and dumbbell bench the most. When I do it I can directly compare it from where I was 7 years ago and I did my first gym session, and the progress motivates me (from 10kg to 30kg each hand).

Bench is the lift I feel I have mastered the best, but since it's much simpler than squats, I don't want to class it as my favourite. The progress with bench is rewarding and fun, but progression in squats is much more rewarding because of the difficulty and challenge.

I'm really surprised to see how badly the bench is doing - to be beaten by OHP; that's just embarassing!

For me I plumped for the deadlift. It was a close run thing because I am a new convert and massive fan of the Clean and Jerk too. The deadlift wins because it's a movement that every gym should be able to have, yet you so seldom see people doing in commercial gyms. Why? Because you can't cheat them - it either goes up and you're strong enough, or stays put and you're not. It's such a leveller.

If every gym in the world had a set of rubber plates and decent platforms to lift on it would be the clean and jerk though - the power and explosion required is brutal, and I wish I saw people doing it well more often.

The outcome of this poll represents my sentiments towards the various lifts rather well. I'd rank them in order of the results with deadlifts at the top and bench at the bottom. I would have expected the bench to be ranked higher, given its popularity at the gym. There just seems to be very little practical benefit from bench pressing. Unlike squats, deads and olympic lifts which make you run faster, jump higher, improve posture and mobility, etc.

I'd love to be able to learn olympic lifts. If I had a proper place to learn, with good coaching, they'd definitely be at the top of the list. Too bad I'm stuck with accesory movements like power cleans and overhead squats for now. One day though... :)

Good poll btw!
