I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Where to get suitable resistance bands?

I was wondering if anybody knows where to get suitable resistance bands to use for pushups etc.

I already have a set of the the tube type ones with handles etc. And a piece of the blue coloured flat band (the type that comes on a roll) but none of these seem strong enough to provide the type of strong resistance im after. To be honest I can barely tell I am using them, I cannot feel any elasticity pulling me down.

Ive looked on ebay and it seems the strongest medical/flat band type is the black colour which seems pretty expensive for a decent length.

Anybody got some tips of what type to get and where from?

I am in the UK, but discussing products from other places would be useful for other forum members Im sure.

-EDIT-

I should have probably put this in Equipment section shouldnt I?

Not to worry, moved it.

I would highly recommend iron woody bands. They might be more expensive than a generic "fitness" band, but they'll be worth it. I bought their "assisted pull up package" which comes with a small, medium and large band, for $100NZ delivered. Bluestreak bought the same set, I believe, and he is happy with them too. The supplier we both bought them from was pretty crap (long waits for delivery and poor communication), but the bands themselves are excellent.

I use them for assisted pull ups, and for Behind the Neck Pull Aparts, which an awesome shoulder health exercise (I'll post about this and more in your shoulder thread). The small band would be too light for most exercises, but the medium and large have a good amount of resistance. For example, the large band is too much for me if I hold the ends, loop the band behind my back and try to press it.

I got my bands from the same place and would say the same thing mjh said. They may not be quick about shipping, and communication is a bit spotty, but the bands are worth it.

Didn't Medhi have some discount deal with them? Or was that a one time promotion thing?

Pullum sports sell Woody's in the UK. They seem quite reasonable. I was thinking of ordering some myself. Probably a stupid question, but I only need a single band of each category right? I only ask cos a lot of places sell them in pairs.

The single bands are sold for assisted pull-ups, adding resistance to push-ups, or for doing some resistance exercises while traveling or away from the gym.

The pairs are for adding band resistance to barbell exercises (one on each side), which is an advanced technique.

I'd say buy singles now, you can always buy extras later if you need them.

Hi!

I recently bought a band, tired of greasing and getting nowhere I decided to get a resistance band to help with the chin-ups. I bought mine from here http://www.absolutegolduk.com/shop/band4pair.html

The band looks like this:

Cost was 20GBP including packaging, paid via Paypal and it was very quick delivery (2 days from placing the order).

I'm not affiliated with them, just a happy customer.

BTW I'm 300lb and this band helps by about an extra 20% of assistance on the pull up for me, I was going to go for the highest number 5 band however, I figured I didn't want that much help. The number 4 I think is just right for me so much so I finally did one assisted chin up... Yay! :D
Stats on 26/02/2010
Age: 39, Height: 6ft 5", Weight: 300lbs, BF: Think it's about 20%
Squat 5x5: 132lbs, OHP 5x5: 88lbs, Bench Press 5x5: 155lbs, Deadlift 1x5: 242lbs

Just ordered the basic woody pull up package (it is a lot of money for just some rubber). As a fresh stronglifts beginner, I can do 1 or 2 correct chinups, but a pull up is still too heavy :/ I had some cheap fitness band, but it's too short and gives hardly any resistance. So, now let's wait the delivery...

You'll be pleased with your purchase, Daikona.

I've gotten a tracking number, probably wont take that long to really ship.

I've been reading the starting strength book, and I've found a photo where you attach the resistance band it horizontally to your powerrack - you standing on the band to do the pull up; is that a better way than attaching it to the pull up bar and the knees, or is it the same or *do want you feel like doing*.

This is how I do it. Easier to get on and off since my pins are lower than what the bottom of the band would be if I were to loop it over the top of the power rack and I also haven't built any boxes to easily get on and off that method. Just note that the amount of assistance is not the same between the two methods. But really, it's not an exact science anyways.

TOday I went to the post office, to get my resistance bands :) Although they look like some ordinary rubber elastics, this will be fun today :) Already tried one variation on how to use them with my pull ups (horizontal placement), the strong one gives a lot of help at the bottom... anyway we'll see how it works out :) they actually delivered it in less than 10days - to Belgium - (2days ago the mail man passed by at house, but nobody was home... nuts :)

Expensive for what it is? Yes, I agree. But it's something you are not going to buy twice I think. I'm really happy now and they are of decent quality. Those 'tubes' don't do their job well for me.

Bicycle inner tubes work too. Double/triple for extra resistance/assistance.
