I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

I might have to plus one that too. I actually picked functional strength, but it wasn't my primary motive for starting SL5x5. I did that to put on weight for a bet, and to see whether I could do it. So Physique was my first aim, but that rapidly fell by the wayside as I became hooked on adding weight to the bar and seeing whether I could still lift it. Plus hooked on improving my technique constantly. Lots of little things keep you interested with this sport. I have settled on functional strength as I really notice the carryover into my day-to-day life now. I used to have bad posture and a related shoulder injury but that has gone since starting here. I'm also remarkably more co-ordinated (better at throwing sports like darts, chucking paper into waste bins and chopping veg like a professional chef) since starting this programme. I'm reasonably sure they're all related and because they are improvements to my body's ability to perform functions I chose functional strength.

Good topic choice too!

First off, I strength train because I like to! An added plus is because I don't want to shrink. I guess that fits under the General Fitness" category.

You forgot "To Make Up For Perceived Inner Weakness/Insecurity".
Well, there's "other" I guess.

But really, I think everyone who sees it necessary to train is trying to make up for something...whether it be the simple lack of physical activity. Me, I'm a different person when I train AND I teach people how to train, and it makes me feel good. Everything boils down to that, pretty much.

Picked base strength. Early in the year I got rather obsessed with powerlifting and I wish to build a strong base to build on when/if I start training for meets.

I would like to have clicked "all of the above" but that wasn't an option so I picked functional strength. Began SL5x5 because I wanted to add some muscle on to my frame after having recently lost a big chunk of weight. Adding the muscle was intended to help me in day-to-day activites, sports, looks, general fitness and just in general feeling better about myself. And it worked until a series of injuries and a long lapse in diet crept in. I am hopefully getting myself back on track.

I've been weak all my life, and I've always looked strong, with a big chest and massive legs. I picked functional strength as I want some real strength to go along with my massive frame. I could maybe have said base strength, as once I hit 1xBW I'm planning on switching gears, and train for conditioning. But who knows, I might want to take SL5x5 as far as I can, before I switch tracks.
