I really debated about starting a log. This journey gets very personal at times. It's hard to announce to the world things you didn't even want to admit to yourself. But that's why I did it. It needed to be right in front of me so I could deal with it head on. And I needed support to get through it. Who would have thought I'd find that here of all places. But I did. These guys have been a great help and encouragement through some tough times for me and they probably don't even realize it. - Pagangoddess

Working out temporarily renders me mentally "slow"

After I workout I notice I have trouble thinking. I have a postworkout shake with .4g protien per KG + .8g carbs per KG maltodextrin/dextrose in 1L of water. I use oats sometimes too but atm Im finishing my rolled oats b4 I buy powdered ones. I eat well before and soon after the gym, like I had oatmeal with some whey and milk for breakfest with strawberry juice and a multi vitamin. I slept 8hrs. I also had about 250mL of coffee b/c it helps me workout.

I walk to the gym mostly (which sucks), 15 min uphill walking/skateboarding. I go to the gym for about 1.5hrs max. I think its closer to one hour but when I go with friends they talk a lot (Im about to stop going with one b/c of it). I then walk back home, too tired to skate.

Today : I squated 275, benched 205-210 (205 was ez today), and rowed 165, and with proper form. I also Deadlift 285 and Press 125 on the other days. I also only go once or twice a week, my friends are holding me back promising to go and then saying tommorow, and bitching out, I've had enough of it and recently I just go.

So basically I get slow. I cant think or follow conversation like I normally can. I got home at 1:45, ate chinese at 3:30. This bothers me b/c I am going to school again soon and if Im like this I won't be able to study. Why am I like this?!?!?! I also drink a gallon of water everyday too.

Imma take a nap see if that fixes it.

I have this sensation too after a really hard squat or deadlift session sometimes. I usually recover within a couple of hours. This is why i lift in the morning and study at night, i'm not much for thinking in the morning anyway (not a morning person) so it works out ok for me.
Goals:
Squat- 315 lbs 5x5
Deadlift- 400 lbs 1x5 (regular grip)
Press- 205 lbs 1x5
Current (known) 1RM:
Squat: 371 lbs
Clean: 220 lbs

After a hard workout I shower, sit in the steam room/hot tubs, and all I want is to eat and go to sleep. If only I could work it that way in my schedule, but alas. If I ever get a home gym that will be exactly what I do. If you can, I say add a nap into your post workout routine.

Its now 5:30, just took a hot shower and slept for 30+min and I feel fine physically. But my brain seems to be a little slower still. Not as bad as before. I assume working out is not only physically but mentally stressful and the brain needs time to recooperate. Im also the kind of person who is constantly thinking about everything so I don't think that helps :P.

Anyone know if this will stop when my body adjusts to it, or will strength training always leave me "slow" for a short period after it? I know I will be sharp as a tack tonight, but atm ugh I feel like... I cant even think of a word besides slow lol.

i usually workout after work at the end of the day. so shower and dinner is right after the gym so going to bed at 11 pm is easy. i have been working out during lunch now, it actually works great cause i shower up and go back to work, i dont get tired cause i do a lot of "mental" work. then after work i can go home and nap or d whatever. i usually end up having dinner with the wife and catching a show or two.

I train in the morning, and work directly after I'm done showering/eating. Sometimes I need a nap because I'm tired, but no problems with "mentally" slow. I think you're just tired, tried napping & sleeping more at night. Also stop with that maltodextrine/dextrose stuff, you're getting pure sugar, huge insulin spike. Stick with oats, see if that doesn't make you feel better.

What's wrong with an insulin spike after your workout? I always read it's important to refill your glycogen depots!

Hmm.. I read that article before, doesn't really answer my current question though ;)

I've tried shaking water, whey and oats before btw, to be honest it was the most disgusting shake I've ever had.. I couldn't swallow it without gagging. Perhaps the oats to water ratio was to high but I don't feel the need to try it again :P

Did you grind the oats first?

Ok for some reason I didn't feel as bad this time. I think when I was squatting last time I put pressure on my neck so that may have cause it. I felt a little slow but I guess thats just exhaustion.

Has anyone ever heard of naturally detoxifiying the lymphatic system? It is the releasing of the waters around the cells, so upon exertion you get maximum oxygen and circulation to the cell. You then "Get Into" breath instead of getting "Out" of it and you gain energy instead of losing it. It can be a custom to believe that if you are out of breath at the end of your workout that you achieved maximum effort and results. But in reality you are depriving your cells of the oxygen that had to struggle through the fluids of the body to get to the cells. This is when energy and breath are lost. The need for counterfeit energy drinks to replenish would not be necessary. Just give the body what is necessary without making it work so hard.

So are you going to tell us how to do it? You've mentioned this in 2 posts and not actually told us anything.

But oxygen can only pass to cells through solution (ie water). Also oxygen doesn't move though the lymphatic system.
