Dave M. from Oklahoma just send me this incredible email of how he lost 14.4lb in only 5 weeks of StrongLifts 5×5, while eating like a horse. Quote…
Ok, first off, your StrongLifts 5×5 Program is AWESOME!!!
A little about me and how i found your life changing program. I am 34 years old and have been in the military for a little over 11 years. Over the last few years I started to let myself go and had gotten pretty lazy with my physical training, to the point that I hadn’t even trained at all for almost 6 months!
About 6 months ago I fell into a deep depression stemming from work stress and a poor self-image. I went into therapy and they suggested that I would feel better if I exercised more. So, determined to get myself out of the funk I had developed, I began walking everyday. I started to feel better, but I was bored as hell.
So I started going to the gym with some co-workers. When I started I weighed in at 199lbs at 5’9″ and 24% body fat. I wanted to lose my gut and get back into shape. So I cut my calories to 1600 a day.
Let me just say they were in way better shape than me, and doing the same things that I used to hate when I was a gym-rat in my teens. Endless reps of isolation exercises, day in and day out, every single day, 2 hours at a time. And they doing those crazy cross-fit HIIT drills randomly throughout the week.
Again I got bored, lifting the same weight every day and being sore all the time was not on my “fun to do” list.
So I sat down one day and remembered what my Dad and Uncle used to tell me about working on the farm. “We never went to the gym when we were in school, we got plenty of exercise right there on the farm. And we were stronger than most of the kids that were on our teams. You wanna get strong? Go move hay bales for a summer and clean out stalls. You’ll be stronger than you can believe.”
My Dad was on the track team and my Uncle was a wrestler in high school. I always took it as them bragging about the glory days, but I will admit they both still look strong… even with that mid-life spread that won’t ever go away.
Thats the kind of strength I wanted, not just to look strong, but be strong, real-world strength, not that “hey i go to the gym” strength.
So my online search began. I tried this and tried that, got bored with everything I found, all of it just seemed “gimmicky”.
Then I found StrongLifts 5×5. It was like a huge explosion went off in my head when I read your words. Finally, someone that understands what I’m looking for! Simple easy to follow workouts, no gimmicky clutter, no endless reps, no BS.
I jumped on board the very next day. I went to the gym and started doing squats with just the bar. I got a lot of crazy looks from everyone in the gym. When I started I thought this will be easy for the first few weeks, boy was I wrong. I had let myself go so much that by the 5th set of squats with just the bar I was sweating like a horse. It was great!
When I started SL5x5 exactly 5 weeks ago I weighed 190lbs 23% body fat. I’m following the program from the bar up and today I am squatting 140lbs. I knew this was going to help me get back into shape but I had no idea how fast! I had to start eating more cause I was so hungry all the time. And get this, today I weighed in at 175.6lbs, and I’m eating like a horse according to my wife.
I get teased by my co-workers, laughed at by the “strong guys” that “know how to train”. I get the whole gambit of what SL Members refer to as being a freak. And I’m loving every minute of it. And I’m going to spread the word and get my co-workers to jump on board with this program by showing them what real strength is.
This program has given me a whole new outlook on life. All I can say is, I’m a believer, and I’m a freak.
Thank you so much,
Dave from Oklahoma
Great job on the weight loss. Most guys won’t understand that you can actually lose weight eating like a horse, but the fact is that when you’re lifting 3x/week you’re burning more calories and raising your metabolism, especially once past 225lb on the Squat. Add healthier food choices which almost always contain less (hidden) calories and salts, and your results should be no surprise.
Let the co-workers call you a freak, they’ll soon be envious and come to you for advice. Thanks a lot for spreading the word, please update me on your progress after 12 weeks on StrongLifts 5×5, because this is really just the start.
P.S. If you have a similar success story, please send it to me by email and I’ll publish it on the blog to motivate other guys. Do include before/after pictures, because otherwise some guy who will say it didn’t happen.
