Why the Anabolic Diet works & How
Jun 8th, 2007 by Mehdi
Several of you were intrigued by last week’s post 10 Reasons You Should Get On the Anabolic Diet.
“Doesn’t work.” “I don’t believe this.” “Can’t be possible.” Are some of the reactions I received.
This post will give you a basic understanding of why the Anabolic Diet works & how.
Anabolic Diet. The dietary plan in the Anabolic Diet consists of:
- Monday to Friday: High Protein / High Fat/ Low Carb
- Saturday & Sunday: Carb Loading
This setup naturally increases the production of the muscle building hormones:
- Testosterone
- Growth Hormone
- Insulin
Let’s see how the Anabolic Diet does this.
Testosterone. Testosterone is a natural muscle building steroid and key to health & well-being. Benefits of high testosterone levels include:
- Increased muscle mass
- Increased strength
- More energy
- Enhanced libido
The Anabolic Diet has high intakes of:
- Cholesterol; and
- Dietary fat
Both are responsible for the increase of your testosterone levels.
Growth Hormone. Another natural muscle building steroid in your body. Growth Hormone:
- Increases muscle mass
- Promotes fat breakdown
- Forces your body to use fat for energy
- Helps fighting Stress
Some factors stimulating Growth Hormone secretion:
- Dietary Protein
- Low levels of blood sugar
- Stress
The Anabolic Diet includes all three of them:
- High amounts of protein intake
- No carb consumption for 5 days
- Extreme carb up in the weekend, which your body perceives as stress
Leading to increased Growth Hormone release.
Insulin. Insulin is tricky. It has both positive & negative effects.
- Positive: stimulates muscle growth
- Negative: responsible for laying on fat
The Anabolic Diet controls insulin
- Weekdays: insulin goes down, low blood sugar
- Weekend: insulin goes up, extreme insuline peak
Both result in increased Growth Hormone secretion: more muscles, less fat.

Very nice article man. I will definitely subscribe for the next update.
Next article on the Anabolic Diet will be for next Friday. Tnx for subscribing Dan.
Anabolic diet is the best thing ever. Meat, eggs and cheese through the week. Anything lowfat on Sunday. It rules. Once you make the switch to utilizing fats for energy rather than carbs, you are home free. I suggest going 14 days with only 3 full body workouts and zero carbs to get used to it, have a huge cheat day and start your new routine.
I am a trainer and have 13 people on my program and 10 of them have gained 8 pounds while losing 3% bodyfat.
Glad to read the Anabolic Diet works with your trainees too Michael.
Very nice article !
I’m 41 y.o male. Almost two years ago I was 33 + % fat, 116 kg and decided to change my life style and live longer .Thanks to Bill Phillips and his book ‘Body for life’.
I got membership in a gym and started to lift weights 5 days a week with some cardio 2 days a week.
I did some progress and my body fat (measured by calipers) is 25 % and weight is 103 kg.
Three months ago I started AD .I started from cutting ,probably it was a big mistake , my calorie intake is about 2400 kcal . 60 % fat 5 % carb and 35 % protein .
I’m eating very clean Anabolic Foods (fatty beef ,olive oil , sardines ,salmon , whole chicken , fish oil , eggs ,bacon ) .No fast food .ONLY DIET SODA . I drink 4 L water a day . Once a day I have apple .Two times a day I got EC stack (25 g ephedrine, 200 g caffeine) . I’m doing carbing once 13 days . I just can’t eat large amount of carbs ,only 250-300 g. (oat ,all bran) .
Now for month, my body weight is at 101-102 kg and body fat is about 22 %. Probably I need to tweak diet ,but I’ve no idea to which side (increase or decrease ) .
Yesterday I got my blood test. All include Testosterone- free level is OK . Only one parameter is below normal is glucose (3,3 ) but I’m assuming is ok for AD diet .
Sergei. Why don’t you make a training/diet journal in the forum section? This way I can better see your appraoch, what you’re doing & give some tips. Forum is at the top in the nav bar.
Hi. Just got turned on to this thru my trainer. Sounds ideal for my palate (lol)! My concern is that I am not a bodybuilder. Am 42 and female. I want to regain strength and flexibility along with weightloss. Is this an appropriate food plan for me? I have fought with lowfat diets for years and they have been exactly that, a fight. Am hoping this may be doable for me. Also, can you give me examples of where transfats are commonly found as every company is now so keen on promoting “0 g Transfat!”. Thank you for a most informative site!
